📖 Story of Daeyoung Kim: A Vocal Artist Who Redefines Time and Culture — Re-imagining the Lives of Korean Modern Artists Through K-Art Song
International Recognition and Educational Impact
After graduating from the Korea National University of Arts, Daeyoung Kim continued his studies in Germany, where he completed both the Diplom and Meisterklasse programs at the Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg with the highest honors.
He first gained national recognition by winning numerous competitions in Korea, including the JoongAng Music Competition, the Music Association of Korea Competition for Overseas Study, and the Daegu Vocal Competition. His talent soon garnered international acclaim as he received top prizes at prestigious European competitions such as the International Singer’s Competition “Alexander Girardi” (Coburg, Germany) and the International Competition “Anselmo Colzani” (Bologna, Italy). Notably, he became the first Asian laureate at the “Dr. Luis Sigall” International Competition for Musical Performance (Viña del Mar, Chile), establishing himself as a world-class vocalist.
Renowned for his distinctive vocal color, expressive acting, and commanding stage presence, Kim has performed over 50 operatic roles in more than 700 performances, earning wide acclaim from audiences and critics alike. Beyond opera, he has shown a deep passion for oratorio and concert repertoire. Since making his debut as bass soloist in Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle at the Berlin Philharmonie in 2009, he has performed major works such as Dvořák’s Stabat Mater, Gounod’s Cäcilienmesse, Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Requiem, and Verdi’s Requiem.
In recent years, Kim has expanded his artistic reach through contemporary and symphonic works — notably performing Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 14 “Lyrics for the Death” with the TIMP Ensemble in 2022, and giving the Korean premiere of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 13 “Babi Yar” with the Gwangju Symphony Orchestra in 2023.
Legacy and Future Projects
His project seeks to reimagine and revive the voices of Korea’s modern and contemporary artists by transforming their lives and creations into song. Each work is a musical reinterpretation of an artist’s spirit — from the poetic introspection of Yun Dong-ju and Hwang Dong-gyu, to the enduring humanism of Kim Min-ki, and the vibrant visual world of Lee Jung-seop and Song Mong-gyu.
Through these compositions, the project paints the emotional landscape of Korea’s turbulent modern history — where art was not only an act of creation, but also of resistance, hope, and self-reflection.
From Starry Night (2017) and A Joyful Letter (2017) to The Words of an Ox (2020) and The Four Seasons of Jung-seop (2025), each piece adds new color and sound to the legacy of these artists, bridging past and present through music.
Ultimately, this work aims to breathe new life into forgotten stories, allowing today’s listeners to experience history not through textbooks, but through voice, melody, and emotion. Continuing this journey, the artist continues to bring new color and light to Korean art songs, reimagining their beauty and meaning for contemporary audiences.
